The Nehemiah Project
Rationale:
This project is based on the premise that the level of community cleanliness influences behavior in and toward the community, and contributes to residents’ health and sense of well-being.
Objective:
The objective of the project is to launch a broad-based, long term, sustainable campaign with the active involvement of Buckeye residents, churches, businesses, community organizations and local government agencies in creating a positive mindset toward keeping Buckeye clean.
Model:
The Campaign concept is based on two models: (1) Nehemiah’s model for restoring the wall in Jerusalem that had been destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon in 587 BC. The plan was for each household and community entity to take responsibility for restoring and maintaining the portion of the wall in front of its dwelling or place of operation. The sense of community and encouragement engendered allowed them to complete the wall that had lain in ruins for 163 years in 52 days. (2) The model of Rwanda in Africa, that rose from the ruins of colonial-inspired inter-tribal conflicts resulting in a genocidal war in the mid-1990s, to national unity and pride, reflected in the wide recognition of Rwanda by 2020 as the cleanest country in Africa, and its capital, Kigali, as the cleanest city in Africa.
